The computer programmer is a creator of universes for which he alone is responsible. Universes of virtually unlimited complexity can be created in the form of computer programs. ― Joseph Weizenbaum, Computer Power and Human Reason

Three private victory habits

My outlook on life is governed by the following principles:

  • Be pro-active (transform ourselves into men and women of integrity)
  • Begin with the end in mind (e.g., the purpose of your life or an important project)
  • Put first things first (see table below)

  • Q1: Things to which you absolutely must attend
  • Q2: High leverage activities; important but not urgent:
    • Planning
    • Preparation
    • Relationship-building
    • Reading
    • Improving professional knowledge
    • Exercise
    • Etcetera
  • Q3: Things that consume your time but do not contribute towards your goals
  • Q4: Avoid as much as possible

Put habits 1, 2 and 3 together giving you the ultimate success formula: get your mind right, define what is important, then organize your life to maximize your quadrant 2 efforts.

Four public victory habits

  • Think win/win (finding solutions that will truly benefit both sides of a dispute), that is, reciprocity/mutualism
  • Seek first to understand, then to be understood
  • Synergize (when the whole is greater than the sum of the parts)
  • Sharpen the saw (engage in the exercise of the 4 dimensions which make up the human condition):
    • Body
    • Mind
    • Spirit
    • Inter-personal

The 8th habit

  • Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs:
    • Recognize and develop your true nature
    • Express your voice through vision, discipline, passion and conscience

Six cancers (C’s) that inhibit people’s greatness

  • Cynicism
  • Crictism
  • Comparing
  • Competing
  • Complaining
  • Contending
